H.R. No. 1195

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On April 21, 2011, the 175th anniversary of the
Battle of San Jacinto, the City of Conroe, Montgomery County, and
the Friends of the Flag Foundation are dedicating the Lone Star
Monument and Historical Flag Park, an inspiring new commemorative
  plaza located in Conroe; and
WHEREAS, This imposing site is designed to educate visitors
about a crucial chapter in Texas history, the time when
independence from Mexico was won and a new republic was
established; partially ringing the plaza are 13 historically
significant flags, chosen from the more than 50 standards that were
associated with Texas during this period; among those that have
been selected for display are flags connected with important
battles of the revolution and with groups of American volunteers
who came to the aid of the insurgents, as well as early national
flags, such as that adopted for the Texas Navy in 1836; a plaque at
the base of each flag presents information about its history; and
WHEREAS, In the center of the plaza stands a 14-foot-tall
bronze statue called the Texian; portrayed as a veteran of the Texas
Revolution, he holds aloft the Lone Star Flag, the striking banner
that became the national flag of Texas in 1839; a bust of the man
whom many credit with designing that flag, Dr. Charles B. Stewart,
graces the entrance to the plaza; both sculptures were created by
the award-winning Conroe artist Craig Campobella; and
WHEREAS, The development of this park is a shared
achievement; Montgomery County donated the land on which the park
sits, and the City of Conroe underwrote the construction costs; a
nonprofit group, the Friends of the Flag Foundation, which was
organized by Mr. Campobella, will assume responsibility for
installing replacement flags, as needed; and
WHEREAS, Local officials and civic leaders envision the
creation of a heritage trail that will link the park in Conroe with
other area sites of historical interest, places such as the
Fernland Historical Park in Montgomery, the town where Dr. Stewart
made his home, the Sam Houston Memorial Museum in Huntsville, and
the many-faceted Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site,
with its reproduction of the hall where the Texas Declaration of
  Independence was adopted; and
WHEREAS, The Lone Star Monument and Historical Flag Park is
powerfully evocative of the time and events it memorializes, and
over the coming years, it is certain to foster in countless visitors
a new understanding and appreciation of the unique heritage of the
Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of the Lone Star
Monument and Historical Flag Park and extend congratulations to
everyone who helped to complete this notable project.
