R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Members of Village Republican Women in Houston are
  celebrating the 50th anniversary of their club on April 11, 2011;
  and
         WHEREAS, Founded as the Precinct 273 Republican Women's Club,
  this noteworthy organization was chartered as a member of the Texas
  Federation of Republican Women in 1961 under the new name of Village
  Republican Women; from an initial membership of 14, it has grown to
  become one of the largest Republican women's clubs in the Houston
  area, and its members have held leadership roles in the TFRW and the
  Greater Houston Council of Federated Women; and
         WHEREAS, Participants in Village Republican Women give
  generously of their time, talents, and financial resources to
  support campaigns at the state and local levels, and many have been
  involved in national campaigns and issues as well; among other
  endeavors, they have distributed campaign literature, hosted
  candidate forums, staffed telephone banks, and participated in
  block walks; the organization places a strong emphasis on voter
  registration, and members have gone door-to-door and set up tables
  at shopping centers and neighborhood festivals over the years to
  help citizens register to vote; and
         WHEREAS, In addition, VRW members have taken part in numerous
  endeavors to benefit the community; the club has assisted in
  literacy efforts, including the Reading is Fundamental program in
  the Spring Branch Independent School District, Reach Out and Read,
  and the Dictionary Project, which is sponsored by the National
  Federation of Republican Women; members have also sponsored teams
  in the Race for the Cure, collected and distributed reading
  material to hospitals and retirement homes, and worked in behalf of
  the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Houston; supporting the men and
  women of the armed forces, they have contributed to the Wounded
  Warrior Project, Operation Uplink, and Operation Interdependence,
  and they have prepared many care packages for troops deployed
  abroad; and
         WHEREAS, Over the past half-century, members of Village
  Republican Women have made a lasting difference in their city and
  beyond through their grassroots activism and community service, and
  they may take justifiable pride in their rich history of civic
  engagement; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Village Republican Women on the
  occasion of its 50th anniversary and extend to all those associated
  with the group sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Village Republican Women as an expression of high
  regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
