R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to |
|
a close when Colonel Milton Leland Haskin (Ret.) of El Paso passed |
|
away on March 1, 2011, at the age of 87; and |
|
WHEREAS, "Lee" Haskin was born on July 30, 1923, to Mr. and |
|
Mrs. Howard L. Haskin in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and spent much |
|
of his youth in Madison, Wisconsin; after attending the University |
|
of Wisconsin for a year, he answered his nation's call to duty in |
|
April 1943 and joined the U.S. Army; he received an appointment to |
|
the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1944 and |
|
graduated with the Class of 1947; and |
|
WHEREAS, Commissioned as a second lieutenant, Lee Haskin |
|
served with a field artillery battalion in Europe before assuming |
|
command of a battery at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin; he subsequently |
|
served as an operations officer with a field artillery battalion in |
|
Korea, as an officer with the J-5 division at the North American Air |
|
Defense Command in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and as commanding |
|
officer of the 4th Battalion, 41st Artillery, in Europe; his |
|
assignments also included a stint with the Nuclear Weapons Branch, |
|
Strategic Operations Division, J-3, of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in |
|
Washington, D.C.; and |
|
WHEREAS, A graduate of the Guided Missile Staff Officer |
|
School and the Command and General Staff College, Colonel Haskin |
|
held appointments as a member of the staff and faculty of the Air |
|
Defense Artillery School and Center at Fort Bliss, as a professor of |
|
mathematics at West Point, and as a professor of military science at |
|
Norwich University; and |
|
WHEREAS, Colonel Haskin's last posting was at White Sands |
|
Missile Range in New Mexico, where he had charge of the Training and |
|
Doctrine Command Systems Analysis Activity; he retired from the |
|
army in 1975, after a distinguished career of nearly three decades; |
|
among the many military honors he received were the Legion of Merit |
|
with one oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service |
|
Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation |
|
Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal; and |
|
WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Colonel |
|
Haskin enjoyed a loving marriage of more than 63 years with his |
|
wife, Patricia; they were blessed with two children, Kathryn and |
|
Thomas, as well as four grandchildren; and |
|
WHEREAS, Lee and Pat Haskin moved to El Paso in 1976 and |
|
became active members of their community; Colonel Haskin taught |
|
math at St. Clement's Episcopal Parish School for many years and |
|
devoted countless hours to volunteer work; he sat on the board of |
|
directors for numerous organizations, including the West Point |
|
Society of El Paso, the Santa Teresa Country Club, and the |
|
International Committee of the Greater El Paso YMCA, and he served |
|
as secretary of the board for the Westside Family YMCA, as treasurer |
|
and vice president of the board for the El Paso Council for |
|
International Visitors, and as treasurer of the El Paso County |
|
Historical Society; he also helped lead the Area Agency on Aging as |
|
chair of the advisory council and helped guide the Greater El Paso |
|
Tennis Association as its president; in addition, he served on |
|
several committees at The University of Texas at El Paso; and |
|
WHEREAS, Lee Haskin lived a life of honesty and integrity, |
|
and while his death brings great sadness to his family and friends, |
|
he leaves behind a legacy of memories and achievements that will |
|
long be treasured by all those who held him dear; now, therefore, be |
|
it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Colonel Milton |
|
Leland Haskin and extend sincere condolences to the members of his |
|
family: to his wife, Patricia Haskin; to his daughter and |
|
son-in-law, Kathryn and Kenneth Erickson; to his son, Thomas |
|
Haskin; to his grandchildren, Andrew Erickson, Heather Ortiz, |
|
Karolyn Dicken, and Rebecca Haskin; to his great-grandchildren, |
|
Bryce Erickson and Xavier Ortiz; to his sister, Marylin Windes; to |
|
his niece, Colby Windes; to his nephew, Craig Windes; and to his |
|
other relatives and friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Colonel |
|
Milton Leland Haskin. |
