R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, In celebration of the 65th anniversary of KWTX Radio |
|
in Waco, a reunion of past and present employees is being held on |
|
April 29, 2011, and this occasion offers a welcome opportunity to |
|
pay tribute to KWTX and to M. N. Bostick, the man who guided the |
|
station for a half-century; and |
|
WHEREAS, A group of Waco businessmen, including future Texas |
|
governor Beauford Jester, applied for a radio broadcast license in |
|
1941; after a delay caused by World War II, KWTX began airing on May |
|
1, 1946; its mix of music, news, sports, and drama was overseen by |
|
station manager M. N. "Buddy" Bostick; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Moody on May 18, 1918, Buddy Bostick learned |
|
to play the guitar and yodel at a young age, and he began making |
|
appearances on a weekend radio show; he managed the Baylor |
|
University radio station while a student there and then took |
|
announcing jobs in Little Rock, Memphis, and Dallas; after |
|
interrupting his broadcasting career for gunnery school during the |
|
war, he became the manager of KWTX at the age of 28; and |
|
WHEREAS, During the following five decades, Mr. Bostick |
|
presided over a growing media company that debuted KWTX-TV in 1955 |
|
and KBTX-TV out of Bryan-College Station in 1957, purchased |
|
stations in Victoria, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, and introduced an FM |
|
radio station in 1970; he received the Pioneer Broadcaster of the |
|
Year Award from the Texas Association of Broadcasters and marked |
|
his 50th anniversary with KWTX Radio in 1996; and |
|
WHEREAS, The radio stations were sold to GulfStar |
|
Communications that year, and this notable Texan went on to be |
|
active in banking and philanthropic work; he also helped in the |
|
development of the Waco Mammoth Site; and |
|
WHEREAS, Throughout his notable career in radio, Buddy |
|
Bostick was responsible for entertaining and informing numerous |
|
residents of the Lone Star State, and his contributions to the Texas |
|
airwaves are indeed worthy of commendation; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 65th anniversary of KWTX in Waco |
|
and honor Buddy Bostick for his 50 years in broadcasting; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared |
|
for KWTX and for Mr. Bostick as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
