R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Members of the Greenbuilders Club at University |
|
Middle School in Waco made an outstanding showing and took home |
|
second place at the School of the Future Design Competition |
|
regional jury event held in Houston on February 14, 2011; and |
|
WHEREAS, The School of the Future Design Competition, |
|
sponsored by the Council of Educational Facility Planners |
|
International, challenges student teams to design schools that |
|
enhance learning, conserve resources, and engage the surrounding |
|
community; the competition, open to middle school students, |
|
requires teamwork, planning, documentation, and creativity, and |
|
gives participants a chance to collaborate on a project from the |
|
concept phase through completion; and |
|
WHEREAS, Students in the University Middle School |
|
Greenbuilders Club developed renovation plans for the cafeteria of |
|
the building they will occupy next year; they met with |
|
representatives from the construction industry, visited other |
|
schools in the district to learn how green concepts were involved in |
|
their design, and devoted months to expanding their knowledge of |
|
sustainability, school planning, and architecture; and |
|
WHEREAS, Before a jury, Greenbuilders Club members Ellen |
|
Coleman, Austin Deleon, Emanuel Lopez, Lyssette Ortiz, and |
|
Gabrielle Smith exhibited the results of a semester's worth of work |
|
on their design: a project model, an audiovisual presentation, and |
|
a narrative description documenting their planning process and |
|
rationale, as well as supporting materials such as elevation and |
|
perspective drawings; and |
|
WHEREAS, The group's visit to Houston provided an excellent |
|
opportunity to showcase the innovative work of these outstanding |
|
students, and they may indeed take justifiable pride in their |
|
achievements; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate the Greenbuilders Club at |
|
University Middle School on its outstanding showing in the School |
|
of the Future Design Competition and extend to the club's members |
|
sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the club as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
