R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Paul Quinn College received the inaugural HBCU of
  the Year Award from the Center for Historic Black Colleges and
  Universities Media Advocacy and HBCU Digest on March 18, 2011; and
         WHEREAS, In recognizing Paul Quinn College, a private liberal
  arts college in Dallas, the selection committee remarked on its
  institutional resiliency and tremendous accomplishments over the
  past 18 months; the school achieved a seven-figure budget surplus
  in fiscal year 2010 and partnered with PepsiCo's Food for Good
  Initiative to establish the Food for Good Farm; this social
  entrepreneurship project addresses the lack of affordable, healthy
  food in economically depressed neighborhoods and promotes
  sustainable urban redevelopment along with nutrition, exercise,
  and other preventative health measures; moreover, the college has
  improved fund-raising, overhauled its core curriculum, and created
  a writing program; and
         WHEREAS, This noteworthy institution was founded in Austin by
  African Methodist Episcopal preachers in 1872; five years later, it
  moved to Waco, and in 1990 it relocated to a 140-acre campus in
  Dallas; the oldest historically black college in Texas, the school
  initially taught industrial skills such as blacksmithing and
  carpentry to former slaves before evolving into a liberal arts
  college; and
         WHEREAS, Today, Paul Quinn College offers bachelor's degrees
  in business administration, education, biology, and computer
  science; it defines its mission as providing a quality, faith-based
  education and preparing students to become servant leaders and
  agents of change in their communities; and
         WHEREAS, Guided by president Michael Sorrell, Paul Quinn
  College has built on a remarkable history that spans nearly 140
  years to reach a new level of excellence in 2011, and its students,
  faculty, and administration can take justifiable pride in this
  prestigious accolade; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Paul Quinn College on its receipt
  of the 2011 HBCU of the Year Award and extend to all those
  associated with the school sincere best wishes for the future; and,
  be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Paul Quinn College as an expression of high regard by
  the Texas House of Representatives.
