R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan truly merits
  special recognition, and Hazel Walker Trammell of Mount Pleasant is
  celebrating this joyous milestone on April 24, 2011; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Mount Pleasant on April 24, 1911, the former
  Hazel Walker was the oldest daughter of Henry and Iwiller Walker;
  she was named salutatorian of her class at Booker T. Washington
  School and graduated from Centerpoint High School in Pittsburg;
  determined to further her education, she went on to attend Prairie
  View State Normal and Industrial College; and
         WHEREAS, She married United States Army Corporal Maceo
  Trammell on January 17, 1942, and the couple shared a rewarding
  relationship of 36 years before his passing in 1978; kind and
  nurturing, Mrs. Trammell dedicated herself to the well-being of her
  nieces and nephews and has been an outstanding role model for her
  younger relatives; and
         WHEREAS, Through the years, she worked as a seamstress and
  debt collector and cared for a number of children in their homes;
  Mrs. Trammell has most notably benefited Mt. Olive Baptist Church,
  where she is a lifelong member and has run the kitchen and served as
  superintendent of the Sunday school; taking on myriad leadership
  roles, she has served as commander and secretary of the American
  Woodmen and as secretary of the Heroines of Jericho; in addition,
  she has been a member of the Ladies' Sunshine Club and the Secret
  Pal Club; and
         WHEREAS, Deeply committed to her community, Mrs. Trammell
  became the first African American woman to run for the Mount
  Pleasant City Council; she volunteered extensively for decades,
  and, as an octogenarian, she delighted friends by proclaiming that
  she had to "go feed the old people" as she set out on her Meals on
  Wheels route; moreover, she gave generously of her time and talents
  to assist "the old folks" in nursing homes, sewing and laundering
  gowns for them and bringing cheer through her vivacious
  personality; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Trammell has spent many happy hours socializing
  over pinochle and a variety of board and card games; blessed with
  numerous talents, she has earned great admiration for her beautiful
  quilts and adventurous cooking, and her delicious hot tamales, made
  from scratch, have always been much in demand; and
         WHEREAS, Vibrant and generous, Hazel Trammell is a source of
  inspiration to all who are fortunate enough to know her, and she may
  reflect with satisfaction on a century of life well lived; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Hazel Walker Trammell on the
  occasion of her 100th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes
  for continued happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mrs. Trammell as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
