R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, For his outstanding dedication to classical music in
  the Rio Grande Valley, Dr. Carl Seale is being honored at the Valley
  Symphony Orchestra and Chorale Red Bow Concerto Gala on April 30,
  2011; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Seale holds a bachelor's degree in music from
  Baylor University, a master's degree in music from the University
  of Louisville, and a doctor of musical arts degree in composition
  from the University of North Texas; he worked as the orchestra
  director for high schools in Denton and Edinburg before serving as
  the head band director at Harlingen High School for six years; in
  1971, he joined the faculty of The University of Texas--Pan
  American and two years later was appointed conductor of the Valley
  Symphony Orchestra; and
         WHEREAS, The sixth person to fill this prestigious position
  since the orchestra was founded in 1952, Dr. Seale helped to ensure
  the group's ongoing success by leading the effort to form the South
  Texas Symphony Association, which was organized in 1976 to
  supplement UT--Pan American in its support of the orchestra; also
  during Dr. Seale's tenure, the Rio Grande Valley Chorale joined the
  VSO, becoming a permanent addition to the concert season; and
         WHEREAS, A gifted and prolific composer, Dr. Seale has
  created works in a wide variety of genres, including two ballets,
  two operas, and three series of hymn tunes, and his composition "The
  Flight of Icarus" won the Texas Orchestra Directors Association
  Composition Contest in 1996; he conducted his own "Symphony for
  Friends: A Farewell" in May 2001 to mark his retirement from the
  orchestra, and later that year, he fulfilled a commission by the
  Valley Land Fund with a multimedia piece he named "Jewels of a Land
  Alive"; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Seale has further distinguished himself as a
  guest conductor with the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra and several
  Mexican state orchestras, as a clinician and conductor for school
  bands in Texas, Kentucky, and Indiana, and as the longtime music
  director for the First Presbyterian Church in McAllen, where he
  composed and arranged a number of works for the choir; although he
  is now retired, he continues to serve as conductor emeritus of the
  Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorale and as professor emeritus at
  UT--Pan American; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Seale's musical achievements have inspired
  and delighted audiences in the Rio Grande Valley for more than 30
  years, and he may indeed take great pride in his contributions to
  the cultural richness of the region; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to Dr. Carl Seale on the occasion of
  the Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorale Red Bow Concerto Gala
  2011 and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Dr. Seale as an expression of high regard from the
  Texas House of Representatives.
