R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The city of El Paso lost one of its most beloved |
|
residents with the death of Dorr M. Miller on April 9, 2011, at the |
|
age of 99; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Abilene on November 23, 1911, Dorr Miller |
|
moved to El Paso with his family in 1926; he graduated from El Paso |
|
High School in 1929 and attended the Texas College of Mines and |
|
Metallurgy, now The University of Texas at El Paso, after which he |
|
worked for Standard Oil Company in New Mexico for several years; he |
|
answered his nation's call to duty during World War II, enlisting in |
|
the U.S. Army in April 1942; during the war he served in Europe with |
|
General Patton's 3rd Army for 22 months and saw action during the |
|
Battle of the Bulge; he received five campaign stars for his service |
|
and was discharged from the army in February 1946 with the rank of |
|
captain; and |
|
WHEREAS, After the war Mr. Miller returned to El Paso, where |
|
he opened M & M Refrigeration Supply with his brother, L. A. Miller, |
|
in July 1948; the business was a success and they were able to add |
|
stores in Albuquerque, Tucson, and Chihuahua; and |
|
WHEREAS, Active in his community, Mr. Miller held lifetime |
|
membership in the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce and served as |
|
president of the chamber, the El Paso Central YMCA Board, the El |
|
Paso Country Club, Los Caballeros, and the El Paso Historical |
|
Society; he also volunteered his time with the Boy Scouts, Active |
|
20-30 International, and the United Way; in addition, he played an |
|
instrumental role in the community effort to bring professional |
|
baseball back to El Paso, an endeavor that culminated in the El Paso |
|
Sun Kings taking the field in 1961; in 1957 the City of El Paso |
|
honored him with the Conquistador Award, the city's highest honor; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Miller enjoyed 42 years of marriage with his |
|
first wife, the former Jacqueline Nash, and they were blessed with |
|
two sons; after her death in 1989, he was fortunate enough to find |
|
love again with Betty Jean Ponder, with whom he shared a rewarding |
|
marriage until her passing; and |
|
WHEREAS, Known for his kind and generous nature, Mr. Miller |
|
was a friend to many; he greatly enjoyed the outdoors and loved |
|
hunting, fishing, and golfing; and |
|
WHEREAS, Deeply devoted to his family and his community, Dorr |
|
Miller made a meaningful difference in the lives of his loved ones |
|
and fellow citizens alike, and his contributions will be fondly |
|
remembered for years to come; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dorr M. Miller and |
|
extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his sons |
|
and daughter-in-law, James "Jamie" Miller and Ronald "Ron" and Judy |
|
Miller; to his granddaughters, Melissa Burkett, Jennifer Barthels, |
|
and Ashley Miller; to his grandson, Grayson Miller; to his |
|
step-grandson, Christian Barron; to his five great-grandchildren; |
|
to his friend, Kate Crombie; and to his other relatives and friends; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dorr M. |
|
Miller. |
