R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the |
|
death of Isaac Field Roebuck, Jr., of Dallas on April 15, 2011, at |
|
the age of 80; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Graham on September 6, 1930, Field Roebuck |
|
earned his diploma from Graham High School in 1948; he attended The |
|
University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated summa cum laude, |
|
receiving both his bachelor's and master's degrees in petroleum |
|
engineering; possessing a gift for music, he was a drum major in his |
|
high school band and a member of the Longhorn Band at UT, serving as |
|
its president in 1951 and 1952; he also helped pay his way through |
|
college by playing tenor saxophone and clarinet for dance bands in |
|
the Austin area; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 1957, Mr. Roebuck married the former Joan |
|
Gerhardt, and they enjoyed a rewarding relationship that spanned |
|
more than 50 years and were blessed with a daughter, Sue Ellen; and |
|
WHEREAS, After his graduation from UT, Mr. Roebuck joined the |
|
petroleum engineering faculty at the school and also became a |
|
registered professional engineer; he later served as the vice |
|
president of overseas exploration for Core Laboratories and vice |
|
president and general manager of Engineering Numerics Corporation; |
|
in addition, he was president of his own independent engineering |
|
and geological consulting company, Roebuck Associates; and |
|
WHEREAS, Listed in Who's Who in the Southwest, Who's Who in |
|
Science and Engineering, and American Men and Women of Science, Mr. |
|
Roebuck was a member of the Society of Independent Professional |
|
Earth Scientists, the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and the |
|
American Association of Petroleum Geologists; he shared his |
|
professional expertise as an adjunct professor of geological |
|
sciences at Southern Methodist University and authored 35 |
|
scientific papers; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Roebuck was a dedicated organic gardener and |
|
rosarian; as a freelance writer and photographer, he contributed |
|
gardening articles to the Dallas Morning News and other |
|
publications and authored the books Foolproof Guide to Growing |
|
Roses and Complete Roses: Featuring 100 Easy-Growing Favorites; he |
|
was a member of the Garden Writers Association and the Western |
|
Writers of America; and |
|
WHEREAS, A past president of the First Men's Garden Club of |
|
Dallas, Mr. Roebuck also belonged to the Dallas Area Historical |
|
Rose Society, and a rose called the Field Roebuck was released to |
|
honor his service to those two groups; in addition, he was a member |
|
of the Heritage Rose Society, the Heritage Rose Foundation, the |
|
Texas Botanical Garden Society, the Royal Horticultural Society, |
|
and the Seeds of Texas Seed Exchange; and |
|
WHEREAS, Field Roebuck was an admired individual who excelled |
|
in a wide variety of pursuits, and he will be fondly remembered and |
|
deeply missed by all who were privileged to know him; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Isaac Field Roebuck, |
|
Jr., and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to |
|
his wife, Joan Roebuck; to his daughter, Sue Ellen Roebuck; to his |
|
first cousin, John Rawlins Gilliland; to his nieces and nephews, |
|
Diana Lynn Welsch, Mark Alan Welsch, Kim Hinson Goodwyn, Stanley |
|
Rawlins Hinson, Eric Foster Hinson, and Andrew Roebuck Hinson; and |
|
to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Field |
|
Roebuck. |
