R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Maria Luisa "Tita" Yanar of El Paso has spent a
  lifetime guiding others as an educator and mentor; and
         WHEREAS, From her first job as a Spanish teacher at Bassett
  Intermediate School in the El Paso Independent School District in
  1971 to her current position as director of The University of Texas
  at El Paso Upward Bound program, Tita Yanar has dedicated her career
  to encouraging youth and helping people gain the skills they need to
  succeed; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Yanar earned a bachelor's degree in secondary
  education with a double teaching major in English and Spanish from
  UTEP, where she also obtained a master's degree in education with a
  specialization in curriculum and instruction; and
         WHEREAS, Before joining the Upward Bound program in 1998, she
  gained a wide range of experience in such roles as the associate
  director for the UTEP Mother-Daughter Program, director of the
  National Hispanic Institute's El Paso Programs, project
  administrator for the Young Leaders Conference, and associate
  director for the El Salvador CAPS Program, which provided
  instruction in U.S. teaching methodologies to a group of Salvadoran
  educators; while she was with the NHI, she mentored future Texas
  state representatives Marisa Marquez and Naomi Gonzalez, helping
  develop their interest in government service; and
         WHEREAS, Through the years, Ms. Yanar has further
  distinguished herself as a valued community leader, serving on the
  board of the Women's Fund of El Paso, Chamizal National Memorial,
  the International Hispanic Cultural Institute, the Paso del Norte
  Public Policy Institute, and the National Hispanic Institute; among
  the other organizations that have benefited from her time and
  energy are the Rio Grande Safe Communities Coalition, the Region 19
  Education Service Center, the International Hispanic Cultural
  Institute, El Paso Community College, and the League of United
  Latin American Citizens; she has also worked on committees for the
  El Paso Boys and Girls Clubs, Project Change, and the Children's
  Summit of the First Ladies of the Texas-Mexico Border; and
         WHEREAS, This dynamic and committed woman has guided
  countless young Texans toward educational opportunities, and her
  efforts have made a positive and lasting difference in their lives;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby honor Tita Yanar for her outstanding
  professional and community service and extend to her sincere best
  wishes for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Yanar as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
