R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, In an impressive display of agility and precision, |
|
The University of Texas at El Paso claimed its first-ever National |
|
Cheerleaders Association Co-Ed Division Championship at the |
|
College Nationals competition, which took place April 6-9, 2011; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, The 19-member Miners team, accompanied by mascot |
|
Paydirt Pete, competed against 12 other universities at the event |
|
in Daytona Beach, Florida; the determined UTEP squad bested such |
|
cheerleading powerhouses as the University of Michigan, Marshall |
|
University, and the University of Central Oklahoma, winner of the |
|
previous four national championships; and |
|
WHEREAS, The team members dedicated their performance to |
|
Ronny Jo Villarreal, a 2001 UTEP graduate and a former captain of |
|
the cheerleading squad, who had recently passed away after a battle |
|
with breast cancer; Ms. Villarreal had visited the team in 2010 and |
|
inspired them with a message of strength and perseverance; and |
|
WHEREAS, Winning a national championship represents the |
|
culmination of countless hours of hard work and an enduring |
|
commitment to excellence, and these talented competitors and Miners |
|
head coach, David Vasquez, may take justifiable pride in this |
|
accomplishment; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate The University of Texas at El Paso |
|
cheerleading team on winning the 2011 National Cheerleaders |
|
Association Co-Ed Division Championship and extend to its members |
|
sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the squad as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
