R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The Plains High School academic competitors
  distinguished themselves with an exceptional performance at the
  University Interscholastic League 1A Region 1 Spring Meet on April
  15 and 16, 2011; the team claimed second place overall, with
  numerous members qualifying to take part in the state meet in
  Austin; and
         WHEREAS, In the team portion of the regional event, the
  Plains High calculator squad of Denise Tarango, Autumn Friesen,
  Cody Friesen, and Hunter Welch won the title with a first-place
  finish, as did the mathematics team of Mr. Welch, Ms. Tarango, Ms.
  Friesen, and Mayra Cueto; in addition, the number sense team of Mr.
  Welch, Ms. Tarango, Troy Alldredge, and Jack Chu finished third;
  and
         WHEREAS, Two Plains High students claimed individual
  regional titles; Ms. Tarango won the calculator applications event
  and also qualified for the state meet in mathematics, while Mr.
  Welch is the regional champion in mathematics and also qualified
  for state in calculator applications and one-act play; the other
  members of the school team who earned a trip to the prestigious
  competition in Austin are Adriana Corrales, who finished third in
  news writing, Ms. Friesen, who will compete in one-act play, and Ms.
  Cueto, who will contend for the state title in mathematics; and
         WHEREAS, The success at the regional meet follows the
  excellent effort that the Plains High Cowboys and Cowgirls made at
  the district competition, where the calculator, mathematics, and
  journalism teams all placed first; moreover, a group that included
  Ms. Cueto, Ms. Friesen, Mr. Friesen, and Mr. Welch won the Texas
  Math and Science Coaches Association state championship in
  calculator in March 2011; and
         WHEREAS, The Plains High academic program is ably guided by
  coordinator and calculator coach Brad Friesen, mathematics coach
  Kelly Bowers, and journalism coach Jolene Taylor; and
         WHEREAS, Through their intelligence and hard work, these
  determined students have earned the opportunity to test their
  abilities against the other top high school performers in Texas,
  and they may take justifiable pride in their accomplishments; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate the Plains High School academic
  competitors for their exemplary performance in the regional meet
  and extend to them sincere best wishes for success at the University
  Interscholastic League state event; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the students as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
