R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their memories
  of Denise Short Smith of Plano, who passed away on March 21, 2010;
  and
         WHEREAS, Setting an outstanding example of civic engagement,
  Ms. Smith was an active and valued member of the Republican Party;
  in addition to her work as legislative chair of the Plano Republican
  Women, she supported a number of candidates through the years,
  including Van Taylor in his successful campaign for state
  representative; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Smith was dedicated to giving back to our men and
  women in the military, serving as a U.S. Air Force colonel's liaison
  and facilitating support groups in a Red Cross/USAF joint health
  initiative; she also shared her time to benefit her fellow
  residents as an ambassador for the Plano Symphony Orchestra and as a
  volunteer with George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens
  and the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary; and
         WHEREAS, A gifted writer, Ms. Smith returned to school later
  in life to earn a master's degree in public relations and
  journalism; she graduated magna cum laude from the University of
  North Texas and was awarded many honors for her exceptional work;
  the recipient of a Mayborn Writers Award, Outstanding Public
  Relations/Journalism Student Award, and English Department
  Faculty's Outstanding Student Award, she earned the Kenneth May
  Scholarship and the President's Merit Scholarship as well as
  placement on the Dean's List and President's List; in addition, she
  was a member of the Kappa Tau Alpha National Honor Society and the
  Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society; and
         WHEREAS, Denise Smith was a woman of rare determination and
  passion who was engaged in her community throughout her life and who
  found joy and inspiration in helping others; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Denise Short Smith
  and extend sincere sympathy to all those who mourn her passing; and,
  be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Denise
  Short Smith.
