R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Destiny Dawn Bailey of John B. Alexander High School |
|
in Laredo has been named Youth of the Year by the United States |
|
Border Patrol; and |
|
WHEREAS, With outstanding grades placing her second in her |
|
class of more than 560 students, Destiny Bailey is a leader among |
|
her peers, serving as the president of her class for the past three |
|
years; an active participant in extracurricular endeavors, she has |
|
been a part of her school's Interact and President's Clubs, the |
|
National Honor Society, the Health Occupations Students of America |
|
organization, and University Interscholastic League competitions |
|
in journalism and science; and |
|
WHEREAS, A talented athlete as well, Ms. Bailey ran |
|
cross-country and track and field, qualifying for the regional |
|
competitions in her sophomore and junior years and also serving as |
|
team treasurer; she has learned additional valuable skills through |
|
her work at an Italian restaurant and a tutoring center; and |
|
WHEREAS, This notable young Texan has volunteered at the |
|
Doctors Hospital of Laredo, the South Texas Food Bank, and as a |
|
tutor, and she has given motivational speeches at elementary |
|
schools and with the Girl Scouts of Laredo; she has also donated |
|
many hours as a coach with the National Hispanic Institute, having |
|
previously been a nationals qualifier in the institute's annual |
|
debate competition; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Bailey was chosen as Miss Laredo Teen in 2010; |
|
she will attend Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, in |
|
the fall, and plans to major in neuroscience; and |
|
WHEREAS, In all of her endeavors, Ms. Bailey enjoys the love |
|
and support of her family, including her parents, Harlan E. Bailey |
|
and Laura Bailey, who have always worked hard to provide her with |
|
many opportunities, and her siblings, Megan, Naomi, Tiffany, Hope, |
|
and Cash; and |
|
WHEREAS, Destiny Bailey can reflect with pride on her |
|
academic record, extracurricular achievements, and contributions |
|
to her community, and she may indeed look with anticipation toward a |
|
promising future; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Destiny Dawn Bailey on her |
|
selection as the 2011 Youth of the Year by the United States Border |
|
Patrol and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Ms. Bailey as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
