R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The members of Glad Tidings Assembly of God in
  Houston have marked a joyful milestone with the 75th anniversary
  celebration of the founding of their church; and
         WHEREAS, Glad Tidings traces its roots to the work of a "home
  missionary" known as Mother Luster Hayes, whose ministry led to the
  founding of the Studewood Assembly of God; and
         WHEREAS, Nearby, the Brooksmith Assembly of God was
  officially founded on December 28, 1934; under the leadership of
  the Reverend William Law and his wife, Judy, worship was held in a
  lodge hall and later moved to a site on Enid Street; and
         WHEREAS, In 1942, the Studewood and Brooksmith churches
  merged to become the Glad Tidings Assembly of God, under the
  guidance of W. Houston Summerall as the first pastor; next to serve
  were the Reverend Grady Q. Manley and his wife, Annabel, during
  whose pastorate land was purchased and the church home was moved to
  5435 Bingle Road in Northwest Houston; and
         WHEREAS, The Reverend Laurell Akers headed the congregation
  from 1970 until his retirement in 1991; it was during his tenure--on
  Easter Sunday 1987--that the current sanctuary and auxiliary
  buildings were dedicated; from 1991 to 1997, the Reverend David
  Schultz and his wife, Shirley, nurtured the growing membership,
  which has since been led by the Reverend Calvin Durham and his wife,
  Beverly; and
         WHEREAS, Countless area residents have looked to Glad Tidings
  Assembly of God for strength and inspiration through the years, and
  it is a pleasure to join in honoring the church at this special time
  in its rich history; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate all those affiliated with Glad
  Tidings Assembly of God on the church's 75th anniversary and extend
  to them sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
