R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Sharon Nowling Perry is retiring from Port Houston
  Elementary School in the Houston Independent School District on
  June 30, 2011, bringing to a close her notable career in education;
  and
         WHEREAS, A native of Houston, Ms. Perry graduated from
  Prairie View A&M University with a bachelor of science degree in May
  1981 and was hired by the Houston Independent School District the
  following August; she taught at William E. Patterson Elementary
  until 1984, when she joined the staff of Port Houston Elementary;
  her professional experience includes more than 20 years as a
  physical education teacher and over five years teaching sixth
  grade; she holds a Provisional Education Teaching Certificate and
  is certified to teach English as a second language; an accomplished
  and respected educator, she has been elected Port Houston Teacher
  of the Year seven times, most recently in April 2011; and
         WHEREAS, During her tenure at Port Houston, Ms. Perry has
  mentored new teachers, served on the Port Houston Elementary Shared
  Decision-Making Committee, and devoted countless hours to
  supporting the school's extracurricular programs; she has
  organized and led sixth graders on their tour of Texas colleges and
  universities, coordinated the school's drug-awareness week,
  sponsored the in-line skating unit, and worked for the past 23 years
  with the Dolphins cheerleaders and tumblers, a group she was
  instrumental in establishing; and
         WHEREAS, This dynamic educator has also volunteered as a
  coach with the Special Olympics, chaperoned groups of Boy Scouts
  and Girl Scouts, and served as a sponsor for the Marathon Kids Fun
  Run, Turkey Trot Fun Run, Rodeo Round-up, and American Heart
  Association's Jump Rope for Heart Event; and
         WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Ms. Perry enjoys the support
  of her husband, Charles; she is the loving mother of a son, Shaun
  Nowling, and the proud grandmother of D'Shaun Nowling; in her free
  time she enjoys reading, hiking, and traveling, as well as playing
  softball and flag football; and
         WHEREAS, Sharon Perry has demonstrated an unwavering
  commitment to her students, and her hard work and dedication have
  made a positive difference in the lives of countless young Texans;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Sharon Nowling Perry on the
  occasion of her retirement as a teacher at Port Houston Elementary
  School and extend to her sincere best wishes for happiness in the
  years ahead; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Perry as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
