R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Citizens of Aransas County are mourning the loss of |
|
longtime public servant Robert Owen Hewes of Fulton, who passed |
|
away on April 22, 2011, at the age of 82; and |
|
WHEREAS, Bob Hewes was born in Tilton, Illinois, on September |
|
5, 1928, to Harley and Hettie Hewes; answering his nation's call to |
|
duty, he served as a military police officer in both the U.S. Navy |
|
and the U.S. Air Force and was eventually posted to a radar station |
|
in Aransas County; and |
|
WHEREAS, Following his discharge from the air force, Mr. |
|
Hewes began a career in civilian law enforcement that included |
|
positions as a patrol officer for the Aransas Pass Police |
|
Department, a deputy sheriff for Aransas County, and chief of |
|
police for Rockport; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Hewes won election as Aransas County sheriff in |
|
1967, and he held that post for a quarter of a century; despite his |
|
Midwestern roots, he became the quintessential Texas sheriff, |
|
wearing a Stetson hat and staring down felons while he chewed on his |
|
cigar; he was named Sheriff of the Year in 1991 by the Sheriffs' |
|
Association of Texas; and |
|
WHEREAS, During his career, Sheriff Hewes made a special |
|
effort to help young people in need; he founded the Aransas County |
|
Sheriff Explorer post and the local Toys for Tots program, and he |
|
was a leader in the Aransas County Youth Support Center; he also |
|
shared his time and talents with the Salvation Army, Aransas County |
|
Crime Stoppers, and Fulton Neighborhood Watch; and |
|
WHEREAS, In the early 2000s, Mr. Hewes returned to public |
|
service as a Fulton City Council member, and he was serving as mayor |
|
pro tem at the time of his death; through the years, he further |
|
distinguished himself as a member of the Fulton Volunteer Fire |
|
Department and the Stewart Wendell VFW Post No. 3904 and as chaplain |
|
of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas; he was also a member of the |
|
First Baptist Church in Rockport and the Fulton Community Church; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman was supported in his |
|
endeavors by his wife, Lynn Hewes, and he was the father of five |
|
children, Robert Miller, Ronald Hewes, Rachael Harryman, Roberta |
|
Hewes, and the late Roxanne Smith; and |
|
WHEREAS, Although Bob Hewes will be deeply missed, he leaves |
|
behind a legacy of service and accomplishment that will continue to |
|
inspire all those who knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Robert Owen Hewes and |
|
extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his |
|
wife, Lynn Hewes; to his sons, Robert B. Miller and his wife, |
|
Rhetta, and Ronald Owen Hewes; to his daughters, Rachael Harryman |
|
and her husband, Terry, and Roberta LeAnn Hewes; to his brother, |
|
Wayne Hewes; to his sister, Sandra Shaw, and her husband, Charles; |
|
to his granddaughters, Tiffany Miller, Amber Hewes, Lauren Miller, |
|
Lynndsey Smith, and Sarah Smith; to his great-grandsons, Blake |
|
Miller and Mason Miller Hewes; and to his other relatives and |
|
friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bob Hewes. |
