R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Christopher Dawson Herrington is retiring as lead
  teacher at the Martin School of Choice in Nacogdoches, drawing to a
  close a distinguished career in education that has spanned 34
  years; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Herrington has worked at the Martin School of
  Choice, an alternative school for at-risk students in the
  Nacogdoches Independent School District, since 1991; he teaches
  English and language arts to children in the 8th through 12th
  grades, employing a self-paced curriculum and accelerated learning
  techniques to help students who have struggled in traditional
  schools; and
         WHEREAS, Deeply dedicated to the youth in his classes, Mr.
  Herrington has served not only as a teacher but as a mentor and, at
  times, a father figure, helping to guide his students through times
  of extreme adversity while encouraging them to strive for a better
  future; determined that they always have someone they could turn
  to, he has kept in touch via phone and Facebook, called on them in
  their homes, and even become a licensed minister in order to visit
  students who were hospitalized or incarcerated; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to standing by his students in the tough
  times, Mr. Herrington has helped them celebrate their triumphs; he
  has been included in their weddings and family gatherings, and he
  has played with their children; he has had the great pleasure of
  seeing many of his former students grow up to enjoy successful
  careers and productive lives; and
         WHEREAS, Chris Herrington shares his passion for education
  with his wife, Glenda, the director of human resources at Stephen F.
  Austin State University; in his spare time he blogs and writes
  essays, and he is an avid racquetball player; and
         WHEREAS, During his more than three decades as an educator,
  Christopher Herrington has demonstrated an unwavering commitment
  to his students, and his hard work and diligence have helped improve
  the lives of countless young people; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Christopher Herrington on the
  occasion of his retirement and extend to him sincere best wishes for
  happiness in the years ahead; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Herrington as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
