R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Kay Butler has served the Buna Independent School
  District with great dedication for more than three decades, and for
  her exemplary leadership and civic engagement she has been named
  2011 Co-Citizen of the Year by the local chamber of commerce; and
         WHEREAS, Each week, Ms. Butler devotes some 60 hours to the
  district; she teaches physical education and health, coaches
  basketball and track, and even drives a bus, and she has always been
  willing to go above and beyond in behalf of public education; and
         WHEREAS, This dynamic Texan holds both a bachelor's degree
  and a master's degree in health and physical education and brings to
  Buna High School a wealth of experience in athletics; as a talented
  young basketball player, she was invited to play on the women's
  Olympic and World Games teams; she has helped countless students
  excel in sports, not only teaching them skills but also instilling
  in them a strong work ethic and sense of discipline; and
         WHEREAS, In the 1990s, Ms. Butler worked selflessly to
  develop a cross country program at Buna High and ran it without
  compensation for two years before funding was made available;
  moreover, she established a Fellowship of Christian Athletes
  chapter and raised funds to take more than 30 youngsters to an FCA
  leadership camp in Colorado, and she later led two more such trips;
  on a volunteer basis, she organized clinics for girls entering high
  school to improve their athletic skills; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Butler has set an inspiring example of service
  to the wider community as well, raising more than $200,000 through
  such efforts as the annual Christmas Challenge, a three-month
  program in which students help to make the holiday season brighter
  for 300 local families in need; in January 2011, Ms. Butler was
  named Texan of the Week by State Farm Insurance; and
         WHEREAS, A gifted teacher, caring mentor, and exceptional
  role model, Kay Butler has made a positive difference in the lives
  of countless young Texans, motivating them to reach their full
  potential; throughout her noteworthy career with the district, she
  has set high standards to which all educators may aspire, and her
  service to the community and its students is indeed worthy of
  special recognition; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby commend Kay Butler for her outstanding
  contributions to the Buna Independent School District and
  congratulate her on her selection as 2011 Co-Citizen of the Year;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Butler as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
