R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their memories
  of Julius Albert Backus of Waco, who died on April 14, 2011, at the
  age of 83; and
         WHEREAS, "Juke" Backus was born on June 23, 1927, in Weesaw
  Township, Berrien County, Michigan, to Emil and Elsie Backus; he
  grew up on a small farm and answered his nation's call to duty with
  service in the U.S. Army; and
         WHEREAS, In 1949, Mr. Backus married the former Helen Durkot,
  and through the years, the couple made their home in Michigan,
  Florida, and Georgia before retiring to Waco; together they were
  blessed with two daughters, Janet and Pamela, and their family
  later grew to include two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter;
  and
         WHEREAS, Skilled with his hands, Mr. Backus was known for his
  fine woodwork and ability to fix nearly anything; he enjoyed a
  variety of occupations, constructing and insulating homes, working
  in a lumber mill and a carpet mill, and owning a craft store; a
  lifelong Lutheran, he was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in
  Bellmead; and
         WHEREAS, Those fortunate enough to have known Julius Backus
  will remember the way he touched their lives with his kindness,
  generosity, and compassion, and he will forever hold a treasured
  place in their hearts; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Julius Albert
  Backus and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family:
  to his daughters, Janet Hurta and her husband, Glenn, and Pamela
  Koch and her husband, Tom; to his grandson, Marcus Koch; to his
  granddaughter, Nichole Nolan and her husband, Fred; to his
  great-granddaughter, Trinity Nolan; to his sisters, Hattie Friar
  and Edna Thompson and her husband, Ed; to his brother, Russell
  Backus and his wife, Lorraine; to his special friend, Gloria Logue;
  and to his other friends and relatives; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Julius
  Albert Backus.
