R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, The Dallas Independent School District is breaking
  ground for the Adelfa Botello Callejo Elementary School at a
  ceremony on May 26, 2011; and
         WHEREAS, Slated to open in the fall of 2012, this
  state-of-the-art facility will be located at the intersection of
  Military Parkway and Buckner Boulevard and will include such
  sustainable features as geothermal heating and air-conditioning,
  natural lighting for classrooms, and energy-efficient plumbing
  fixtures; and
         WHEREAS, The school is named in honor of Dallas attorney and
  civil rights activist Adelfa Botello Callejo; a native of South
  Texas, she became the first Hispanic woman to graduate from
  Southern Methodist University's Dedman School of Law and the first
  to practice law in Dallas; she has been a partner at the law firm of
  Callejo & Callejo for 45 years, during which time she has served as
  a regional president of the Hispanic National Bar Association and a
  director of the State Bar of Texas; in addition, she is founder and
  former president of the Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas;
  and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Callejo has further distinguished herself as a
  tireless champion for social justice, and she has been recognized
  for her efforts with numerous honors, including the Martin Luther
  King, Jr., Justice Award, the Hispanic National Bar Association
  Juarez-Lincoln Award, the Dallas Women Lawyers Association Louise
  B. Raggio Award, and the Equal Justice Award from Legal Services of
  North Texas; and
         WHEREAS, Once completed, the new school will represent a
  fitting tribute to Adelfa Callejo and the ideals of equal
  opportunity to which she has dedicated her life; now, therefore, be
  it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the groundbreaking for the Adelfa
  Botello Callejo Elementary School in Dallas and congratulate all
  those involved in bringing this project to fruition; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
