R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Vietnam veteran George Robert Ludwig of Mabank |
|
distinguished himself through his heroic actions during combat in |
|
1965; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Ludwig entered the U.S. Army flight school at |
|
Fort Rucker, Alabama, in 1963 and was subsequently deployed to Bien |
|
Hoa, Vietnam; on June 10, 1965, First Lieutenant Ludwig was flying |
|
as an artillery observer with the mission of providing radio relay |
|
when he received word that the American compound at Dong Xoai was |
|
under assault by the Viet Cong; he was flying the only aircraft in |
|
the area and instantly volunteered to act as forward air controller |
|
for U.S. fighter bombers en route there; and |
|
WHEREAS, For the next five days, this brave airman flew many |
|
missions over the besieged compound at considerable risk to |
|
himself, skillfully directing airstrikes against the Viet Cong and |
|
playing an essential role in successfully driving back the enemy; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Ludwig was later recognized for his valor |
|
and dedication with the Distinguished Flying Cross, becoming the |
|
only Army pilot of the Vietnam War to be recommended for the award |
|
by the U.S. Air Force; in addition, he earned 20 Air Medals, |
|
including two for valor; and |
|
WHEREAS, Returning to civilian life, Mr. Ludwig worked as a |
|
pilot for Braniff International Airways for 17 years; he went on to |
|
work in the resort industry and to own an oil exploration company |
|
before retiring to Cedar Creek Lake; and |
|
WHEREAS, George Robert Ludwig's courageous and unwavering |
|
commitment to duty during the Vietnam War embodies the highest |
|
ideals of the U.S. armed forces and continues to inspire all those |
|
who are privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commend George Robert Ludwig for his outstanding |
|
service to his country and extend to him sincere best wishes for the |
|
future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Ludwig as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
