R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Joe San Miguel is retiring as publisher of the Del
  Rio News-Herald on June 1, 2011, drawing to a close a notable career
  in the newspaper business that has spanned nearly half a century;
  and
         WHEREAS, A native of Zaragoza, Coahuila, Mexico, Mr. San
  Miguel moved to Del Rio with his family at the age of nine; he went
  to work for the News-Herald in 1962, while still attending Del Rio
  High School; starting as an errand boy and mechanic in the
  pressroom, he learned to operate the paper's presses and soon
  became a pressman; and
         WHEREAS, After graduating from high school in 1965 and
  earning U.S. citizenship, Mr. San Miguel served in the U.S. Army
  with an artillery unit in Colorado; he subsequently returned to Del
  Rio and began his newspaper career in earnest, gaining hands-on
  experience in every aspect of the business; he delivered papers,
  sold advertising, worked in the mailroom, and was eventually
  promoted to circulation manager; and
         WHEREAS, This esteemed professional was named as the
  News-Herald's first Hispanic publisher in 1989, and he has since
  overseen its publication under several different owners; his
  enthusiasm for the paper and his varied experience there have
  inspired many of his staff to take on new tasks and diversify their
  skills; even in retirement, Mr. San Miguel will continue to
  contribute to the paper as a consultant to the new publisher; and
         WHEREAS, Through the years, he has enjoyed the love and
  support of his family, including his wife, Conchita, his daughter,
  Sandra, his son-in-law, Jon, and his grandson, Cayden; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. San Miguel's dedication, professionalism, and
  commitment to excellence have contributed greatly to the success of
  the Del Rio News-Herald, earning him the respect and affection of
  its staff and readers alike, and he may indeed reflect with pride on
  his accomplishments as he embarks on the next exciting chapter of
  his life; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Joe San Miguel on his retirement as
  publisher of the Del Rio News-Herald and extend to him sincere best
  wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. San Miguel as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
