R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Deputy K. C. Simpson and Deputy Jerry S. "Steven"
  White of the Potter County Sheriff's Office are receiving a 2010
  State of Texas Law Enforcement Achievement Award for Valor from the
  Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Stand
  ards and
  Education; and
         WHEREAS, Deputies Simpson and White demonstrated great
  courage and initiative in response to a tragic crime spree that
  occurred one evening that year; and
         WHEREAS, The Potter County Sheriff's Office was alerted that
  a man had attempted to abduct a woman at gunpoint from a gas station
  and, failing, had driven to another gas station, where he shot and
  killed a grandmother who had struggled with him to prevent him from
  abducting her granddaughter; the man then fled the scene toward a
  rural area; he approached two young girls who were walking down the
  road and forced one into his truck; and
         WHEREAS, Deputy Simpson, a three-year peace officer at the
  time, used his knowledge of rural Potter County to quickly find the
  suspect; the deputy followed the man's truck while waiting for
  backup units to arrive; and
         WHEREAS, Deputy White, a peace officer with 17 years'
  experience, also responded to the call, and as he approached the
  suspect, the girl leapt from the moving truck; thinking the girl had
  been murdered and pushed out, Deputy White swung his vehicle in
  front of the truck; the suspect attempted to flee while firing at
  the officers; Deputy White fired back, finally ending the rampage;
  and
         WHEREAS, The bravery, skill, and swift response of Deputies
  Simpson and White brought a horrific series of events to a decisive
  end, and this prestigious award is truly a fitting recognition of
  the heroic actions of these two outstanding officers; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Deputy K. C. Simpson and Deputy
  Jerry S. "Steven" White on their receipt of a 2010 State of Texas
  Law Enforcement Achievement Award for Valor and extend to them
  sincere appreciation for their steadfast devotion to duty; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Deputies Simpson and White as an expression of high
  regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
