AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to including a personal financial literacy component in |
|
|
public school mathematics instruction. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Subsection (a), Section 28.0021, Education Code, |
|
|
is amended to read as follows: |
|
|
(a) The Texas essential knowledge and skills and, as |
|
|
applicable, Section 28.025 shall require instruction in personal |
|
|
financial literacy in: |
|
|
(1) mathematics instruction in kindergarten through |
|
|
grade eight; and |
|
|
(2) one or more courses required for high school |
|
|
graduation. |
|
|
SECTION 2. Subsection (a), Section 31.0231, Education Code, |
|
|
is amended to read as follows: |
|
|
(a) The commissioner shall adopt a list of: |
|
|
(1) electronic textbooks; and |
|
|
(2) instructional material that conveys information |
|
|
to the student or otherwise contributes to the learning process, |
|
|
including tools, models, and investigative materials designed for |
|
|
use as part of the foundation curriculum for: |
|
|
(A) science in kindergarten through grade five; |
|
|
and |
|
|
(B) personal financial literacy in kindergarten |
|
|
through grade eight. |
|
|
SECTION 3. For purposes of the textbook review and adoption |
|
|
requirements under Section 31.022, Education Code, the State Board |
|
|
of Education shall review and adopt mathematics textbooks that |
|
|
satisfy the requirements of Section 28.0021, Education Code, as |
|
|
amended by this Act, on the next scheduled review and adoption cycle |
|
|
for mathematics textbooks after the effective date of this Act. |
|
|
SECTION 4. This Act applies beginning with the 2011-2012 |
|
|
school year. |
|
|
SECTION 5. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2011. |
