SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 57
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Hunter Mason Morris
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of the Reverend-Canon Hunter Mason Morris,
  who died December 22, 2010, at the age of 77; and
 
         WHEREAS, Hunter Mason Morris was born on April 23, 1933, in
  San Angelo to Gilbert Marvin Morris and Doris Mason Morris; he
  moved with his family to Austin when he was a child; he attended
  Austin High School, served as a delegate to the Texas Student
  Council, and continued to serve his 1951 graduating class as
  chairman for various class reunions; and
 
         WHEREAS, He attended The University of Texas at Austin,
  where he was in the Naval Reserve Officers' Training Corps, and
  he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States
  Marine Corps upon graduation; he had a distinguished career in
  the military and moved from serving his country to serving his
  church; and
 
         WHEREAS, He attended the Episcopal Seminary of the
  Southwest in Austin and was ordained at the Church of the Good
  Shepherd; he then served as rector of All Saints Episcopal Church
  in Crockett and then as assistant rector at Saint John the Divine
  in Houston; and
 
         WHEREAS, During his long career with the church, he served
  as executive director of the Episcopal Mission Society in New
  York City and as executive officer in the Diocese of Arizona,
  where he was made canon; he was also president of the United
  States Conference of Diocesan Executives, regional director of
  the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and rector of
  Emmanuel Church in Lockhart; and
 
         WHEREAS, He was especially active as a progressive
  community leader in Houston in the 1960s; he served as executive
  director of Protestant Charities, and he founded the influential
  Houston Metropolitan Ministries; in recognition of his
  interfaith work and his support of the civil rights movement, he
  was an invited faith dignitary in the funeral procession of the
  Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., in 1968; and
 
         WHEREAS, A highly respected and esteemed church and
  community leader, Hunter Morris had a positive influence on the
  lives of many people; he ran Camp Allen, an Episcopal Church camp
  in East Texas, for many summers, and he was active with the Lions
  Club and the Rotary Club; he raised funds for the Boy Scouts of
  America and assisted local service agencies in Austin; he also
  remained active in the Navy Reserve as a Marine chaplain; and
         WHEREAS, He was a descendent of early Texas pioneers and
  was proud of his ancestry; a born leader, decorated war veteran,
  ecumenical church leader, devoted family man, and true-blue
  Texan, Hunter Mason Morris lived life to the fullest; he enjoyed
  camping, bass fishing, gardening, philately, and spending time
  with his grandchildren; a devoted husband, father, and
  grandfather, he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
  forever by his family and all those who had the good fortune of
  knowing him; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of the Reverend-Canon
  Hunter Mason Morris and extend sincere condolences to his
  bereaved family; and, be it further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of the Reverend-Canon Hunter Mason Morris.
