SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 118
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
join the citizens of the Rio Grande Valley and Texans across the |
|
|
state in celebrating January 27, 2011, as The University of |
|
|
Texas--Pan American Day at the State Capitol; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The University of Texas--Pan American was founded |
|
|
in 1927 as Edinburg College; it was renamed Pan American College |
|
|
in 1964 as a reflection of its mission to bridge the cultures of |
|
|
North and South America and to mirror the school's cultural and |
|
|
ethnic diversity; it joined The University of Texas System in |
|
|
1989; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Today, The University of Texas--Pan American is |
|
|
one of the leading institutions of higher education in the |
|
|
nation; it has been named by Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education |
|
|
Magazine as one of the top 100 colleges in the nation for |
|
|
Hispanics, ranking in the top five in the number of bachelor's |
|
|
and master's degrees awarded to Hispanics; it is one of only six |
|
|
universities in Texas named to the Forbes top 100 list of |
|
|
America's Best Public Colleges; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In addition to its outstanding academic |
|
|
offerings, the university offers a wide array of extracurricular |
|
|
activities; its internationally renowned mariachi program has |
|
|
won more than 10 first-place awards at national competitions; |
|
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend the students, faculty, staff, and |
|
|
alumni of The University of Texas--Pan American on their many |
|
|
valuable contributions to our state and extend to them best |
|
|
wishes for a memorable celebration of The University of |
|
|
Texas--Pan American Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the |
|
|
university as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
