SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 138
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to pay
  tribute to Nina Speer on the special occasion of her 100th
  birthday; and
         WHEREAS, Nina Speer was born on February 4, 1911, in San
  Antonio and lived there most of her life; she graduated from
  Brackenridge High School in 1928; she loved school and was a
  member of the National Honor Society; she continues to enjoy
  learning; and
         WHEREAS, She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone
  Company for a time; in 1929, she attended a Christian Endeavor
  function and there met her future husband, Charles Speer; from
  the beginning, the couple formed an enduring bond that lasted
  almost 61 years; her husband died in 1991; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Speer has three children, 10 grandchildren,
  23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; her
  children grew up attending the neighborhood Baptist church; in
  1967, a Presbyterian church was organized nearby, and she and her
  husband became charter members and active leaders; and
         WHEREAS, She became the first woman elder of Hope
  Presbyterian Church and was called to fill the pulpit on several
  occasions; her husband was a trustee and elder; Mrs. Speer taught
  the adult Sunday school class and played the piano and later the
  organ; an accomplished musician, she wrote and published three
  hymns; in 1986, she found a new church home in the Worldwide
  Church of God; and
         WHEREAS, Nina Speer is a loving and charming lady noted for
  her generous spirit and her caring manner; on February 6, 2011,
  she will be joined by her family and friends to celebrate this
  important milestone in her life; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby recognize Nina Speer as a treasured citizen
  of this state and extend to her best wishes for a wonderful
  centennial birthday celebration; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
