SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 144
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of Andrews County and Texans across the state in
  celebrating February 1, 2011, as Andrews County Day at the State
  Capitol; and
         WHEREAS, Situated on the high plains of the Permian Basin,
  Andrews County was established in 1876 and is named for Richard
  Andrews, the first man to die in the Texas War for Independence in
  1835; and
         WHEREAS, Andrews County has long been a leader in the
  ranching industry in Texas, and with the advent of the widespread
  use of windmills, the county became an important source of cotton
  and sorghum; it experienced an impressive oil boom during the
  1940s and remains one of the state's leading producers of oil and
  gas, providing more than two billion barrels of oil since 1929;
  and
         WHEREAS, The Andrews Independent School District is noted
  for academic excellence, with its teams having earned top honors
  at numerous University Interscholastic League academic
  competitions; and
         WHEREAS, The people of Andrews County enjoy an abundance of
  recreational opportunities, including the Andrews County Golf
  Course and many exemplary area parks; the county boasts two
  annual bluegrass festivals, and the Andrews Art Guild Show
  provides a forum for artists to display their works; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Andrews County on
  their many contributions to the rich history of our state and
  extend to them best wishes for a memorable Andrews County Day at
  the State Capitol; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  honor of this special day.
