SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 157
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
join members and supporters of the American Heart Association in |
|
recognizing February 4, 2011, as National Wear Red Day in Texas; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Diseases of the heart are the nation's leading |
|
cause of death, and stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death; |
|
cardiovascular disease claims the lives of over 421,000 American |
|
females each year, approximately one death per minute; 52 percent |
|
of all deaths due to cardiovascular disease and 60 percent of all |
|
deaths due to stroke occur in females; and |
|
WHEREAS, Too many women die each year because they are |
|
unaware that heart disease is their number one killer; in 2007, |
|
the direct and indirect cost of cardiovascular diseases in the |
|
United States including stroke, was estimated to be $286 billion; |
|
nearly as many women die of heart disease, stroke, and all other |
|
cardiovascular diseases than of the next four leading causes of |
|
death combined, including all cancers, yet only 16 percent of |
|
women surveyed in 2009 identified cardiovascular disease as the |
|
greatest health problem facing them; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Go Red For Women initiative is the American |
|
Heart Association's national movement to increase awareness |
|
about heart disease and to empower women to take charge of their |
|
lives and their heart health; making the right choices relating |
|
to proper nutrition, physical activity, and other healthy |
|
lifestyle choices is an essential part of living a heart-healthy |
|
life, and this initiative is designed to remind all people that |
|
by choosing to Make It Your Mission! you can save lives; and |
|
WHEREAS, February is American Heart Month, and the State of |
|
Texas joins in National Wear Red Day on February 4, 2011, as an |
|
opportunity for all citizens to show their support for women in |
|
the fight against heart disease; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd |
|
Legislature, hereby proclaim February 4, 2011, as National Wear |
|
Red Day in Texas and encourage all citizens to wear red on that |
|
day to increase awareness about women's cardiovascular disease |
|
and to show their support; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|
commemoration of National Wear Red Day in Texas. |
