SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 183
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Leon Schmidt on the grand occasion of his 95th
  birthday; and
         WHEREAS, This distinguished gentleman is well known for
  his wisdom and generosity of spirit, and he is a respected
  citizen of Austin; and
         WHEREAS, Leon Schmidt was born February 12, 1916, in
  Yorktown, Texas; a 1932 graduate of Austin High School, he went
  on to earn a bachelor's degree from The University of Texas and a
  master's degree from Harvard University; he served the nation as
  a first lieutenant in the United States Army in the Pacific
  theater during World War II; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Schmidt married Barbara Cowen on October 11,
  1953, and the couple raised four children, Robert, Edythe, Rhona,
  and Sue, who have been a source of much pride and joy; and
         WHEREAS, In the late 1930s, along with his father, Jacob,
  Mr. Schmidt opened Yaring's in Austin; it became an iconic
  business noted for women's fashions and accessories, and for more
  than 60 years offered personalized customer service to the Austin
  community; and
         WHEREAS, Active in community affairs, Mr. Schmidt has been
  a generous donor to such organizations as Mexic-Arte, Court
  Appointed Special Advocates for Children, the Dell Jewish
  Community Center, and the Dell Children's Hospital; and
         WHEREAS, A beloved and respected member of his community,
  Mr. Schmidt is noted for his business acumen, his compassion for
  others, and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby commend Leon Schmidt on his many
  achievements and extend to him best wishes for a memorable 95th
  birthday; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
