SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 324
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize the Harris County Historical Commission and the
  Baytown Carver High School Recognition and Preservation Society
  on the occasion of the dedication of an official Texas Historical
  Marker honoring Baytown George Washington Carver High School at a
  ceremony on April 30, 2011; and
         WHEREAS, The school's origins date from 1921, when the
  Goose Creek School for Coloreds was founded; the grade school
  served African American children from Baytown, La Porte, Cedar
  Bayou, and McNair; and
         WHEREAS, The school building, located at the corner of
  Carver Street and Oak Street, opened in the fall of 1924; the
  school expanded in size over the years and was accredited as a
  high school in 1941; the school also changed its name to honor
  African American scientist, educator, inventor, and botanist
  George Washington Carver; and
         WHEREAS, Eventually, a larger, modern campus opened a few
  blocks away; George Washington Carver High School consistently
  ranked as one of the top segregated schools in the state in
  academics, athletics, and band performance; and
         WHEREAS, The high school closed in 1967, during
  desegregation, and after operating for a time as Carver
  Elementary School, the school buildings were demolished in 2002;
  and
         WHEREAS, The designation of the George Washington Carver
  High School Plant Site with an official Texas Historical Marker
  signifies the importance of the school in the history of Baytown
  and this state; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby congratulate the Harris County Historical
  Commission and the Baytown Carver High School Recognition and
  Preservation Society on the occasion of the Texas Historical
  Marker dedication ceremony for Baytown George Washington Carver
  High School and extend to all best wishes for a memorable event;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared to
  commemorate this significant occasion.
