SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 424
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Nash McDowell Phillips
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Nash McDowell
  Phillips, who died February 7, 2011, at the age of 90; and
         WHEREAS, A legend in the housing industry, Nash McDowell
  Phillips built more than 80,000 homes over the course of his
  career, leaving a lasting mark on communities throughout the
  country; and
         WHEREAS, Born November 28, 1920, Nash Phillips served in
  the United States Navy during World War II as a member of Fleet
  Air Wing 12 in the North Atlantic; he was a graduate of The
  University of Texas, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma
  fraternity; and
         WHEREAS, Following his military service, Mr. Phillips,
  along with partner Clyde Copus, founded Nash Phillips Copus
  Company, which became one of the nation's largest private home
  builders; at its peak, it had operations in Austin, Dallas,
  San Antonio, Houston, and Phoenix; the company was named Builder
  of the Year in 1984 and was later inducted into the Texas Housing
  Hall of Honor in 2009; and
         WHEREAS, Resilient and strong-minded, Mr. Phillips went on
  to create Wilshire Homes in 1991; he served as a mentor and
  inspiration to many who pursued a career in the home-building
  industry; and
         WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and foresight, he gave
  generously to others, and his wisdom, kindness, and valued
  counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
         WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
  and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
  his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Nash McDowell Phillips; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Nash McDowell Phillips.
