SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 477
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Sharon Li of Manvel, who has been named one of the top
  youth volunteers in Texas for 2011 in the 16th annual Prudential
  Spirit of Community Awards program; and
         WHEREAS, These prestigious awards honor young people
  across America for outstanding volunteer service to their
  communities; the program is conducted by Prudential Financial in
  partnership with the National Association of Secondary School
  Principals; and
         WHEREAS, Sharon is in the eighth grade at Berry Miller
  Junior High School; she founded a nonprofit organization that has
  raised more than $20,000 and has collected thousands of donated
  books, clothing items, and shoes for victims of natural
  disasters; when she was 10 years old, there was a terrible
  earthquake in Sichuan, China, and she and her siblings were moved
  by the plight of the victims to create a newsletter in order to
  raise awareness about the disaster and collect donations; and
         WHEREAS, They presented their donations to several of the
  victims on a trip to China and have since then expanded their
  focus, helping people affected by Hurricane Ike in Galveston and
  building an international network to help them provide disaster
  relief around the world; and
         WHEREAS, They made local presentations and obtained grants
  to support their efforts, and Sharon continues to encourage the
  members of her generation to volunteer and participate in service
  where they can be a force for good; and
         WHEREAS, Sharon was nominated for the Prudential Spirit of
  Community Awards by Berry Miller Junior High School in Pearland;
  she will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an
  all-expenses-paid trip in May to Washington, D.C., where she will
  join the top two honorees from each state; and
         WHEREAS, The success and vitality of our communities, our
  state, and our American society depend in great measure upon the
  dedication of young people like Sharon who use their time and
  talents to serve others; and
         WHEREAS, Sharon has shown by her example that she
  personifies the true spirit of giving; she is truly deserving of
  recognition for her dedication to the needs of others; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby commend Sharon Li for her commitment to
  serving others and extend to her congratulations on being named
  one of Texas' top youth volunteers in the 2011 Prudential Spirit
  of Community Awards program; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
