SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 478
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Phillip McClanahan Hopkins, Sr.
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of Tiki Island Mayor Phillip McClanahan
  Hopkins, Sr., who died February 26, 2011, at the age of 73; and
         WHEREAS, Phillip McClanahan Hopkins was born September 19,
  1937, in Trinity, Texas, to Sanford and Lois Hopkins; he
  graduated from Reagan High School in Houston and earned a
  bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at Tri-State College
  in Angola, Indiana, a master's degree in electrical engineering
  from John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and a
  doctoral degree from the University of Houston; he was married to
  the late Angelina Daldos Hopkins; and
         WHEREAS, Phil Hopkins was a professional engineer, a
  Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers,
  and an adjunct professor at the University of Houston; he retired
  from Lockheed Martin at the Johnson Space Center and moved to
  Tiki Island to pursue his favorite hobby, fishing; and
         WHEREAS, Mayor Phil Hopkins was known for his exceptional
  ability to bring people together; he was responsible for helping
  Tiki Island earn status as a city and helped the island survive
  and rebuild after Hurricane Ike; he was also responsible for the
  dredging project that will open up the waterways to allow boats
  easier access to the small island; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Hopkins was president of the Galveston County
  Mayor and Council Member Association and had previously served as
 
  an alderman for Tiki Island and as president of the Tiki Island
  Civic Association; a cancer survivor, he was renowned for his
  optimistic outlook on life, his kindness, and his generosity; he
  was a greatly admired and respected civic leader, and he will be
  deeply missed by all who knew him; he was especially devoted to
  his family, and the memories he leaves behind will remain in
  their hearts forever; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Phillip McClanahan Hopkins, Sr.: his daughter and
  son-in-law, Jean Hopkins Power and Gerard Louis Power III; his
  son, Phillip McClanahan Hopkins, Jr.; his brothers, Sanford
  Davis Hopkins and Lyn Thomas Stanley; and his five grandchildren;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Phillip McClanahan Hopkins, Sr.
