SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 511
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  join the residents of Jim Wells County in celebrating the
  county's 100th anniversary; and
 
         WHEREAS, Jim Wells County was created on March 11, 1911,
  when Governor Oscar Branch Colquitt signed legislation that
  carved the territory out of a part of Nueces County; the county
  was named after prominent Brownsville attorney James Babbage
  Wells, Jr.; the city of Alice became the county seat; and
 
         WHEREAS, In the county's early years, cattle raising was
  the primary economic activity; since the introduction of
  diversified farming, the production of sorghum and cotton has
  been the mainstay of the county's agricultural economy; and
 
         WHEREAS, After oil was discovered in the county in 1931,
  oil and natural gas production became a leading industry; among
  Texas counties, Jim Wells County is one of the all-time leaders
  in oil production; and
 
         WHEREAS, The citizens and leaders of Jim Wells County are
  focused on fostering economic growth in the region and on
  encouraging the enrichment of its educational systems; and
 
         WHEREAS, The county offers attractive scenery and
  recreational opportunities, and its 100th anniversary is an
  appropriate time for its residents to come together and celebrate
  the county's many assets; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the citizens of Jim
  Wells County on the occasion of the county's 100th anniversary,
  on March 11, 2011; and, be it further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  honor of Jim Wells County.
