SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 515
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas
  A&M University on the occasion of its centennial anniversary; and
         WHEREAS, The first public institution of higher learning
  in the state, Texas Agricultural and Mechanical College was
  founded in 1876; the passage of the Hatch Act allowed the
  creation of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, now known
  as Texas AgriLife Research; and
         WHEREAS, The School of Agriculture was founded in 1911 under
  the direction of Edwin J. Kyle; the college's board of directors
  authorized doctoral programs in agriculture and engineering in
  1936, and 10 years later, the School of Agriculture, the Texas
  Agriculture Experiment Station, and the Texas Agricultural Extension
  Service were combined to better serve the needs of Texans; and
         WHEREAS, Through the years, the College of Agriculture and
  Life Sciences has had numerous distinguished faculty members,
  including Norman Borlaug, the 1971 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate; it
  has grown from a single department to a college with 40
  undergraduate degree programs and more than 50 graduate programs
  across 14 departments; and
         WHEREAS, The college contains more than 13 percent of the
  university's students and awards approximately 1,200 bachelor's
  degrees and 200 graduate degrees each year; Texas A&M University
  graduates more students in agriculturally related fields than
  any other school in the country; and
         WHEREAS, The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has
  had a profound impact on the progress, development, and success
  of Texas, and it is truly deserving of recognition as it
  celebrates its 100th anniversary; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby commend the College of Agriculture and Life
  Sciences at Texas A&M University on its many contributions to the
  state and extend to its students, faculty, and staff best wishes
  for a memorable centennial celebration; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the college as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
