            |  | Jose Emilio Barrera | 
         
            |  | 
         
            |  | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and | 
         
            |  | commemorates the life of Jose Emilio Barrera, who died February | 
         
            |  | 23, 2011, at the age of 89; and | 
         
            |  | WHEREAS, Jose Barrera was born August 6, 1921, in | 
         
            |  | Kingsville; he grew up on the Palito Blanco ranch that had been in | 
         
            |  | his family since the awarding of a Spanish Land Grant in the late | 
         
            |  | 18th century; and | 
         
            |  | WHEREAS, A graduate of Benavides High School, Mr. Barrera | 
         
            |  | married Martina Gonzalez in 1943, and the couple raised six | 
         
            |  | children, who blessed them with 17 grandchildren and 18 | 
         
            |  | great-grandchildren; and | 
         
            |  | WHEREAS, Mr. Barrera served his community with distinction | 
         
            |  | for more than 40 years on the Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco school | 
         
            |  | board, serving as its president for more than 20 years; under his | 
         
            |  | leadership, the district was able to construct new schools and | 
         
            |  | renovate others while retiring its debt; and | 
         
            |  | WHEREAS, Mr. Barrera also operated J. E. Barrera Poultry | 
         
            |  | Company, which supplied area grocery stores and restaurants for | 
         
            |  | nearly half a century; and | 
         
            |  | WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he was | 
         
            |  | devoted to his family, and he leaves behind memories that will be | 
         
            |  | treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, | 
         
            |  | be it | 
         
            |  | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd | 
         
            |  | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | 
         
            |  | family of Jose Emilio Barrera; and, be it further | 
         
            |  | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | 
         
            |  | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | 
         
            |  | Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | 
         
            |  | memory of Jose Emilio Barrera. |
