SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 527

In Memory

of

Jose Emilio Barrera

WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and commemorates the life of Jose Emilio Barrera, who died February 23, 2011, at the age of 89; and

WHEREAS, Jose Barrera was born August 6, 1921, in Kingsville; he grew up on the Palito Blanco ranch that had been in his family since the awarding of a Spanish Land Grant in the late 18th century; and

WHEREAS, A graduate of Benavides High School, Mr. Barrera married Martina Gonzalez in 1943, and the couple raised six children, who blessed them with 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Barrera served his community with distinction for more than 40 years on the Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco school board, serving as its president for more than 20 years; under his leadership, the district was able to construct new schools and renovate others while retiring its debt; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Barrera also operated J. E. Barrera Poultry Company, which supplied area grocery stores and restaurants for nearly half a century; and

WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he was devoted to his family, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Jose Emilio Barrera; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jose Emilio Barrera.
