SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 638
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
recognize Nell Burks Elementary School in McKinney, which has |
|
|
been named the first Healthy Zone School; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Nell Burks Elementary School was chosen for this |
|
|
prestigious honor after an extensive search led by the Cooper |
|
|
Institute and the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas; it was |
|
|
selected for its effective health and nutrition practices, which |
|
|
will serve as an example to schools throughout the region; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Childhood obesity has become an increasingly |
|
|
significant health issue as the percentage of overweight |
|
|
children has grown; studies suggest that physically fit students |
|
|
have fewer health problems, perform better on standardized |
|
|
tests, and are less likely to develop disciplinary problems; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Healthy Zone School Recognition Program was |
|
|
established to make training and financial aid available to |
|
|
schools that show a dedication to physical fitness; as the first |
|
|
Healthy Zone School, Nell Burks Elementary School will receive |
|
|
funds to further healthy practices on campus and in the |
|
|
surrounding community; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Nell Burks Elementary School has served the |
|
|
community well by helping to raise awareness of childhood obesity |
|
|
and by promoting the importance of living a healthy lifestyle; it |
|
|
is truly deserving of being named the first Healthy Zone School; |
|
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend the students, faculty, and staff of |
|
|
Nell Burks Elementary School on their commitment to reducing |
|
|
childhood obesity and promoting physical fitness and extend to |
|
|
all congratulations on being named the first Healthy Zone School; |
|
|
and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
the school as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
