SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 694
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
join Texans across the state in recognizing April of 2011 as
Scottish Heritage Month in Texas and in celebrating National
Tartan Day on April 6; and
WHEREAS, An estimated six million citizens of the United
States claim Scottish descent, and people with Scottish ancestry
played a major role in the settlement and development of Texas,
including four native-born Scots who lost their lives defending
  the Alamo; and
WHEREAS, One of the enduring traditions of Scottish
heritage is the tartan, a fabric woven with a distinct pattern to
designate separate clans; the 71st Texas Legislature named the
Texas Bluebonnet Tartan, designed by June McRoberts, as the
  official tartan of Texas; and
WHEREAS, The Scottish spirit of liberty has through the
years found great purchase in Texas; from the evocative sound of
the bagpipes to the great sport of golf, Scottish culture and
heritage have influenced the political and cultural life of our
state and nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
Legislature, hereby commend Scottish Texans on their many
contributions to the legacy of the state and call upon all Texans
to commemorate April of 2011 as Scottish Heritage Month in Texas
and to celebrate National Tartan Day on April 6; and, be it
  further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
