SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 706
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the citizens of Kinney County who have come to Austin
to celebrate Kinney County Day at the State Capitol; and
WHEREAS, Kinney County encompasses 1,359 square miles and
is situated in southwest Texas partly on the Edwards Plateau and
partly on the plain of the Rio Grande, which forms its
  southwestern boundary; and
WHEREAS, The state legislature authorized the formation of
Kinney County from Bexar County in 1850, but the sparsely
populated county did not have enough residents to be formally
organized until 1874; Brackettville was named the county seat in
  1876; and
WHEREAS, Artifacts indicate that the area was first
inhabited 6,000 to 10,000 years ago; later, numerous Indian
tribes lived in the region, which did not begin to lose its
frontier character until after the Civil War, with the
establishment of the county's first school, post office, and
  church in the 1870s; and
WHEREAS, The area has been used primarily for ranching,
particularly the raising of cattle, sheep, and Angora goats; the
coming of the railroads in the 1880s gave the wool and mohair
industry greater access to markets and helped bring in many new
  settlers; and
WHEREAS, Over the last few years, agribusiness and tourism
have been the leading industries in the county; its many tourist
attractions include Kickapoo Cavern State Park, Alamo Village,
Las Moras Park, the Nueces River Canyon, Anacacho Game Preserve,
the Seminole Indian Scout Burial Ground, and Fort Clark; and
WHEREAS, Kinney County Day at the State Capitol provides an
opportunity to honor the county's historic past and its
contributions to the development of Texas; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
Legislature, hereby welcome the citizens of Kinney County to the
State Capitol on Kinney County Day and extend to them best wishes
for an enjoyable visit; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
