SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 840
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to pay
  tribute to the life and legacy of Demetrio David Hachar, who has
  been selected posthumously by Junior Achievement of Laredo for
  induction into the 2011 Laredo Business Hall of Fame; and
 
         WHEREAS, A Syrian immigrant, D. D. Hachar settled in Laredo
  in 1920 and established El Sol Del Oriente, a ladies shoe store;
  his prosperity enabled him to invest in real estate and ranch
  property near Laredo, including El Espejo Ranch, where he owned
  Arabian horses; and
 
         WHEREAS, A modest and generous man, he made gifts to many
  charities and to civic and educational causes; in 1974, when the
  Laredo Independent School District dedicated an elementary
  school in his name, D. D. Hachar was moved by the experience, and
  he made a promise to help finance young Laredoans with their
  formal education; and
 
         WHEREAS, He died on December 22, 1978, and left behind the
  D. D. Hachar Charitable Trust Fund, a living legacy to his
  promise; since the trust's inception in 1980, its funds have
  assisted more than 11,000 Laredo area students with more than $15
  million in scholarships for higher education; the trust has also
  provided generous grants to various nonprofit area
  organizations; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby honor the late Demetrio David Hachar, who is
  now an inductee in the 2011 Laredo Business Hall of Fame, and
  express sincere appreciation for the D. D. Hachar Charitable
  Trust Fund; and, be it further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  memory of Demetrio David Hachar.
