Terry Omar Smith |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of Terry Omar Smith, who died March 8, |
|
2011, at the age of 63; and |
|
WHEREAS, Terry Smith was born April 18, 1947, to Omar and |
|
Elouise Beard Smith; he grew up in Bryan and graduated from |
|
Stephen F. Austin High School; in 1967, he married his high |
|
school sweetheart, Karen Kindt, and together, they built a life |
|
based on faith and service to others; and |
|
WHEREAS, A devout Christian, he lived his faith in his |
|
daily life and was devoted to the young people in his church; he |
|
taught classes for young people in middle school, high school, |
|
and college for many years and was a children's leader in Bible |
|
study fellowship; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith had a lifelong love of tennis; his |
|
father coached the Texas A&M University tennis team, and Terry |
|
played tennis in high school and later as a member of the Aggie |
|
tennis team; he was a follower of all Aggie sports and graduated |
|
from the university with a bachelor's degree in business; he |
|
served on the Texas A&M University College of Education |
|
Development Council in the 1980s; and |
|
WHEREAS, Following in his father's footsteps, Terry |
|
managed a large group of Dairy Queen franchises across Texas and |
|
enjoyed traveling to the stores and meeting with the employees; |
|
he served several terms on the board of directors for Dairy |
|
Queen, including two terms as president; in 2009 he and his wife |
|
received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Texas Dairy |
|
Queen Operators' Council; and |
|
WHEREAS, Terry Smith was renowned for his integrity, his |
|
kindness, and his generosity; he was a caring, loving, and happy |
|
man who was devoted to his family and he leaves behind memories that |
|
will be treasured forever by his family, his many friends, and all |
|
who had the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd |
|
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|
family of Terry Omar Smith: his wife, Karen Kindt Smith; his son |
|
and daughter-in-law, Jeremy Smith and Audra; his daughter and |
|
son-in-law, Heather Barron and Collin; his sister, Jeanne Smith |
|
Cherry; his brother, Don Smith; and his three grandchildren; and, |
|
be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy |
|
from the Texas Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, |
|
it do so in memory of Terry Omar Smith. |
