SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 994
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
join the Harris County Historical Commission on the occasion of |
|
the dedication ceremony for the 1936 Centennial Marker replica |
|
honoring Lorenzo de Zavala; and |
|
WHEREAS, The original marker, erected during the Texas |
|
Centennial celebration and marking the site of the home of |
|
Lorenzo de Zavala, was severely damaged during Hurricane Ike; |
|
this replacement monument is the only replica of a Centennial |
|
Marker to be authorized by the Texas Historical Commission; and |
|
WHEREAS, One of the seminal figures in Texas history, |
|
Lorenzo de Zavala was a signer of the Texas Declaration of |
|
Independence and served as the first vice president of the |
|
Republic of Texas; his plank-covered log home, the first in the |
|
municipality of Harrisburg, was built in 1829 and served as a |
|
hospital following the Battle of San Jacinto; and |
|
WHEREAS, It is truly fitting that Texans continue to pay |
|
tribute to the memory of Lorenzo de Zavala, and the dedication of |
|
this marker represents an opportunity for people to honor his |
|
many achievements; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd |
|
Legislature, hereby commend the Harris County Historical |
|
Commission on its commitment to preserving the area's rich legacy |
|
and extend best wishes for a memorable dedication ceremony for |
|
the 1936 Centennial Marker replica honoring Lorenzo de Zavala; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|
honor of this special occasion. |
