SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1243
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Duard Desmond Linam
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Dr. Duard Desmond
  Linam, who died April 9, 2011, at the age of 91; and
 
         WHEREAS, Duard Desmond Linam was born in Austin on November 13,
  1919, the only child of Henry Lee Linam and Ola Hicks Linam; he
  was proud to be a fifth-generation Texan and a third-generation
  Austinite; his ancestors were original land grantees and
  settlers of Stephen F. Austin's Little Colony; and
 
         WHEREAS, Dr. Linam grew up in the middle-class neighborhoods
  of East Austin, attended Austin public schools, and graduated
  from Austin High School in 1937; and
 
         WHEREAS, He graduated from what is now the Texas A&M
  University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1944 and returned to
  his hometown and began working at the Austin Cat and Dog Hospital
  on East Fifth Street, eventually taking over the practice; except
  for the time he was called to active duty during the Korean War,
  he practiced veterinary medicine at that location for more than
  35 years; and
 
         WHEREAS, Dr. Linam's love for animals was evident in all
  parts of his life; he and a number of veterinarians and animal
  lovers came together to form the Austin and Travis County Humane
  Society in 1952; he served the society as a member of its board of
  directors and in other capacities over several decades and was
  recognized by the society as Life Emeritus Director in addition
  to receiving many other honors for his devoted service and
  significant contributions to the field; and
 
         WHEREAS, He was a longtime active member of several
  professional veterinary organizations and strengthened the
  future of his field by employing high school students during
  their vacations and encouraging many young people to go into
  veterinary medicine; his work was acknowledged over the years
  with numerous awards and accolades, including feature stories in
  the Austin American-Statesman; and
 
         WHEREAS, Dr. Linam was a devoted husband, father, and
  grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
  forever by his family, his many friends, and all those whose
  lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Dr. Duard Desmond Linam: his wife of more than 65
  years, Dorothy Mason Linam; his daughters and son-in-law, Linda
  Linam and Sharon and Frank Holder; his four grandchildren; and
  his great-grandchildren; and, be it further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Dr. Duard Desmond Linam.
