Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 82ND LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

April 3, 2011

TO:
Honorable Garnet Coleman, Chair, House Committee on County Affairs

FROM:
John S O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
HB684 by Larson (Relating to housing prisoners in a tent or other facility in lieu of a county jail.), As Introduced

No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Local Government Code to allow a county to indefinitely house an inmate in a tent or other facility other than a county jail. Current statute permits housing an inmate in such facilities at the request of a sheriff and the commissioners court of a county with the authorization of the Commission on Jail Standards. The bill would require the Commission on Jail Standards to adopt rules to govern the facilities.

Local Government Impact

No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
