LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 82ND LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

February 23, 2011

TO:
Honorable Chris Harris, Chair, Senate Committee on Jurisprudence

FROM:
John S O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB283 by Harris (Relating to the appointment of associate judges in child protective services cases.), As Introduced

No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Family Code to allow a presiding judge of an administrative judicial region with certain provisions to appoint a full-time or part-time associate judge to complete cases under Subtitle E related to child protection suits. An associate judge would receive a salary from funds available from the county as approved by the commissioners court or state and federal governments.

Local Government Impact

The fiscal impact to counties would vary depending on whether there were numerous child protection cases that needed to be completed and if sufficient funds were available; however, the fiscal impact is not anticipated to be significant.
