The bill would amend the Government Code to expand the list of active judicial officers who can receive a concealed handgun license under reduced requirements to include associate judges as defined by Family Code. The bill would also amend the Penal Code to exempt the same group from certain handgun offenses. The bill would take effect September 1, 2011. Amendments to the Penal Code would apply to offenses committed on or after the bill's effective date.
There would be a small revenue loss related to the provisions of this bill. The judicial officers listed in the bill would be able to obtain a concealed handgun license at a reduced cost of $25, from the current applicable rate of $140 for a four-year license. The number of applicants in this category is estimated by the agency to be small.
For this analysis it is assumed implementing the provisions of the bill would not result in a significant impact on the programs and workload of State corrections agencies or on the demand for resources of those agencies.
