Pursuant to a notice posted on February 17, 2012,
the House Committee on Corrections met in a public hearing and was called to
order by the chair, Representative Madden, at 10:07 a.m.
The initial quorum call was answered as follows:
Representatives Madden; Hunter; Perry; White; and Workman.
A quorum was present.
The chair laid out Interim Charge #1 - Monitor the implementation of SB 653 (82R), which created the Texas
Juvenile Justice Department. Make any recommendations needed to enhance the
integration of the Texas Youth Commission and the Texas Juvenile Probation
Commission.

The chair laid out Interim Charge #2 - Study ways to reduce the number of youth referred to the juvenile
justice system. Consider the availability of mental health services, diversion
and early intervention programs, and other prevention methods.
